Our story !

The West Australian Children’s Theatre

Welcome to the West Australian Children’s Theatre. We are the only children’s theatre company in Perth that offers your child the chance to perform in live theatre and work with a script  or camp style specifically written to teach children important life skills. This really is a win: win formula.

Our children’s theatre starts with a very basic question: what can we do to help children feel more positive about their lives? And what resources can we give them, through acting in a theatre group, that will allow them to explore issues that we all have to deal with in life such as bullying, managing money and valuing their own worth?

Our founder, Louise Towler, knows how important it is to reach out to children and draw them into a safe space so they feel confident to express their fears and anxieties and then let go of these negatives as they learn new ways to cope with the world around them. If you’ve had the good fortune to see Louise on stage or meet her in person you’ll know that she is one of the best comic talents in West Australia with a great natural wit and an ability to inspire children to learn through laughter.

As Louise says: ‘once I’ve gained a child’s trust, they open up and throw themselves completely into the world which our theatre school creates for them. Often children start with us and think they’re no good at acting – they may never have been given any encouragement or had any opportunities to get up on stage and perform – and it’s incredible to watch how during the course of one of our theatre productions, a child can go from being shy or anxious to suddenly feeling confident enough to be able to speak confidently in public and turn in a star performance. I’ve noticed that for some children, and quite often this will be boys, they don’t feel confident enough in themselves to show what they’re really feeling. Our theatre productions provide an outlet for children to work through a wide range of emotions with staff who are trained to provide suitable support and mentoring. Our scripts have been written to encourage creativity and risk taking so that each child leaves us having had an exhilarating experience that can be hugely therapeutic and really can help to transform their lives’.

Our fearless leader !

Louise Towler

Louise is first and foremost a seriously funny lady. It’s important to know this as she uses comedy to help and inspire those who cross her path in life. For many years she was a professional comedienne and toured the world performing shows that she co-wrote and produced with her sister. The ‘Big Purple Undies Show’, now also a book, was one of Louise’s best loved shows. In this show she took situations that can happen to any woman and gave the audience permission to share laughter together and through comedy, explore aspects of life that many women may never have talked openly about before.

Louise is also one of the few people here in Western Australia who combines a very practical knowledge of the theatre with life coaching and personal development skills. She uses her training as a Neuro-Linguistic Therapist to provide a model of behaviour that will help children understand that the way people behave towards them and the way they respond is caused by many factors, some of which they can change and some they can’t. The guidance on personal change that Louise has incorporated into her scripts  or camp message means that children who attend her theatre schools will come away at the end of a week better able to deal with many of the challenges that life can throw at them.
